Abhimaan's saga continues...

And then with God's grace their ranks in the WBJEE were also very close... And both of them landed up in GEMI... The first week when they returned home together in the weekends... Abhimaan was too happy that day... envisioning a great future ahead... He went on speaking, nineteen to the dozen... It took him some time to notice that Mallika wasn't exactly responding to him... She was a bit despondent... On enquiriing she just said she wasn't feeling well.

That was the last time they travelled together. Later that day, Abhimaan had received a message stating...
Abhimaan, I really thought about it...
Our relation was nothing but a childhood
infatuation... I deserve much more than
an unsmart jerk like you... I don't love
you any longer... Hope you too will
realise soon... Do not contact me ever again...

Needless to say, Abhimaan got a nerve-wreck... Did whatever he could, she didn't respond back... And now, his last ray of hope was Swastika... He wanted to cling to it...

Abhimaan's saga...

...It was raining cats and dogs in Dohijuri... As far as his vision could lead him to, there was but a foam of white all around... No sane man would have left from his house that day... But this was different... totally different... She had asked her to meet him at the shed off the old cow-yard of the Ghose's... An usually abandoned spot... But then what piece of Earth in Dohijuri wasn't abandoned today... But then there was no chance to replan, postpone or reschedule this rendezvous... The command had been left on his old cycle, a chit stating the location and time, reason went unstated... But then when she called for, no guy in Dohijuri would need reason...

It was the first Kalbaisakhi of the season... The coconut trees were swaying madly, threatening to tear off their bases... Not an animal was to be seen... Even the swans were well hidden behind the reeds... The river was filled upto the brim and threatened to overflow at any moment... Any stranger would been petrified by the way the thunder reverberated in the open space... But he weren't a stranger, he could walk these lanes blind-folded... He knew every lane, every by-lane of Dohijuri... Another deafening thunder brought his senses back to reality...  He had almost neared the pre-decided spot, when a sudden thought sent tremors down her spine... What if she didn't come... He hadn't thought of this earlier... All the happiness that had started forming in him blew off in a second... Yet, he decided to try his luck... He walked on... The path that he would have covered in less than ten minutes on any other day, had taken over twenty minutes today... He was disgusted... Any now there was no one near the  shed... No one at all... At this moment, had it been possible he would have kicked his own butt... But that option being unavailable he kicked at astone ahead of him...

"Ouch"... panted someone... He turned to see her waiting by the banyan tree, drenched to her skin... She was stooping down and rubbing her ankle... He went towards her... picked her up... He was just going to ask her the reason for calling him, when a sweet coice chimed in his ears, "Abhimaan, I love you..." He didn't reply... or rather couldn't reply... His voice was choked... He just bent down a little towards the 5 feet frame and the softness of their lips touched each other...

A night... too long...

She didnt know for how long she had cried... But now she was even tired to cry... Her pillow was wet... Or drenched would be the correct word... Her eyes were stark dry... Eye lids were aching... Earlier crying had helped... But today seemed different... Her thumping heart threatened never to subdue... Unlike other times she was angry with herself... Angry with her audacity to dream again... Angry at her foolishness... Angry at the inability to stop thinking... Angry for being unable to forget...

Yes, she was unable to forget that booming voice... When she had expected to register the eternal three letter... they had deceived her at around 66.67%. Yes, the first two words hadn't changed. All the same, the third word had made all the difference. When she had first heard the name, the world had stopped for a while. The smile had been swapped by astonishment followed by despair. Swastika was never one of those who could control her emotions. Thankfully for her, Abhimaan was looking the other way. Possibly trying to avoid a blush. He was so engaged in his thoughts that he barely noticed the effect he had on the girl sitting beside her. Swastika kept on wondering... Of all people in the world why did it have to be this bitch...

He was lost... lost in the thoughts of his love... who was stranding him... and his was a lost attempt to save his life... He knew only too well that he would not be able to survive without her... And he wanted was to gain access to her via one of her friends. Sree would have been the best option for the job but then again Abhimaan couldn't pull himself up to talk to her. She was far too smart for him. The second best option was thus Swastika. So, he decided that he should tell every detail of those two years that he had spent before joining GEMI... The golden years of his life... When his life revolved around just himself and her... His Lady Love... Mallika...

New dreams...

Ever since the boy had said he wanted to talk to her, her cheek muscles wouldn't relax... giving a decided tinge of red. She was thankful about the fact that Sree was a bit absent minded today, else she would have definitely noticed. At the same time, Swastika was amazed at herself... When she had her last break-up, she had made an agreement with herself that life will never be so beautiful again. Never ever would she fall in love again. But today when he said that he wanted to talk to her, she was happy, very happy... A very well known tinge had passed down through her spine... Life would be happy again... Or will it... A dark cloud hid the sun... It became dark all of a sudden and the bell rang...

She informed Arushi that she would be leaving early. She had slipped into the library and waited for quiet some time until the college was almost empty. Then she slipped into the decided spot. A secluded spot between the trees, not easily spottable from the main lane. By the time she reached there Abhimaan was already sitting there, with his back to Swastika. For a moment she decided to turn and run. She could feel her pulse hammering at her adam's apple. Unknown to herself, a squeak left her throat... Abhimaan...

Standing over 6 feet tall with a lean frame and beetle-black eyes, he smiled down at Swastika. He asked her to sit. Swastika sat just beside him. A hairline's gap between them. They chatted about general things for sometime... This simple conversation was sounding so pleasant to her. His innocence, his genuinity... the way his face lit up... when he talked about his village... the open grounds... the way he used to catch fishes with bare hands... steal ripe mangoes from their neighbour's garden... when it would flood... they would make small boats... Abhimaan went on speaking... Swastika wasn't listening anymore... She was lost in her thoughts... A dreamstep towards a new life... Just then Abhimaan said, "Yeah... now the reason I called you is that.. I... "...

Arushi bewildered...

Arushi was overjoyed when she had found her deductions correct. She found Sree backing out of the class unnoticed by most. Arushi had followed. Today she didn't have to answer Swastika also, as the latter had already informed her that she had some urgent work and would be leaving college in a hurry. Arushi had quietly followed Sree. Down the coridoors, they had reached the stairs leading to the terrace. Infact when Arushi had reached there, Sree was already up the stairs. Arushi decided to take the other flight of stairs to the terrace. When she reached there, she took shelter behind the massive water tank. She could see Sree clearly from there. And Sree was totally a sight...

Streams of tears were flowing down her eyes... She was crying uncontrollably... Arushi almost considered for a second about going out to her... But she knew that would worsen situations... It seemed like eternity until Sree stopped sobbing... Arushi was confused like anything... Sree was the ones who posed solid-like-rock kind of image.... Then why in the world was she crying... Arushi couldn't find any reason whatsoever... Surprisingly, Sree composed herself as suddenly as she had broken down...

She saw Sree walking towards the edge. And all of a sudden the contour of her face changed. Within few seconds... it was bewilderment... shock... sarcasm... Arushi didn't have a hint what had happened. She watched as Sree kept intently watching some part of the ground which wasn't visible from Arushi's side. All of a sudden, Sree broke into a run. Arushi was so surprised that it took her several seconds to realise what was happening. Finally when she started to move down, she knew she was no match for Sree in these parts of the college. She had to grope in the darkness all the way down. But by then she had lost Sree. She walked towards the entrance of the main building. Sree couldn't be seen anywhere near. She somehow had a hunch that Sree was still in there. She decided to wait in the shadows of the building. This time the wait wasn't long. All of a sudden, she saw Sree running down the garden side. What was she doing in the garden at this time of the day? It was almost dark... Sree was looking for something and quite certainly was extremely disappointed not to find it there. But Arushi was bewildered. She had too amny questions in mind. Too many why's to be answered. Disgusted with herself, she followed Sree out of GEMI.

Both the disheartened souls, left the college that day with a heavy heart. Each unaware of the other's reason of sorrow. Both found a commo solution, they decided to sleep over it...

And then there were none...

She waited there for another fifteen minutes. Nature's light was dimininshing by the minute. It was getting blurred. Sree couldnt see clearly any more. But she was certain about the fact that Swastika and the other boy hadn't left college yet. She thought for a moment and decided to take a circuitous route to the main gate of the college. The route that would demand her to cross the place where they were sitting. Though, that would also cause some explanations on her part about being alone in the college for so late. But she didn't care. For the first time that day, she had found her energy back. She took one last glance at that spot. Yes, they were still glued there.

She raced down the stairs. Skipping three at a time. It was pitch dark in the coridoors. She had to slow down and grope her way through. It took her 4 long minutes to reach the ground floor, an exact one and a half minute's loss. She walked out through the back gate and started walking towards the garden. It was hideous in there. The great boughs of the trees were like giant human arms closing in on her. She started cursing herself for walking down the garden at this time of the hour. Reasons unknown to herself, she took up a jog. She felt as if someone else was there behind her.

All of a sudden it started drizzling. Sree had to run. She wasn't far from the corner around which they were sitting. Adrenaline was pumping in her veins, desperate to make its presnce felt. Her heart was pounding like hell, almost threatning her to rip apart. She took a sharp turn round the corner. Ready for an encounter. But... But they weren't there!!! She was flabberghasted. Decidedly unhappy. Where could they go? The walk leading to the main gate was deserted. She felt heart-broken. She hated defeat. What puzzled her more was the fact that she had a weird feeling of being watched. She sweeped her eyes around the campus, atleast as far as she could see there wasn't anyone around. She shrugged her shoulders and started walking down the path with a heavy heart.

Another soul was also present in the college that day. Arushi... Time and again she had noticed Sree disappearing at the end of classes. Today she had decided to follow Sree...

Who is there?

Things were going full swing. The attendance sheet was out for the first half of the semester. And atleast there all three of them had percents well above nine-tens. Inspite of the fact that Swastika and Arushi sat together during the classes but Sree was always with them in the free time. Together they tramped in every part of the college, were caught several times for talking in the library, punished for surfing social networking sites in the net-lab and many more. Sree had got used to their mumblings and their usual reply whenever she asked about it-Just general, nothing much. But unlike before, she had learnt to live with it.

Inspite of all these adverse situations, Sree had started liking this college... she felt like it was her own... At times, after college hours, she wolud walk down the long coridoors in which she would walk alone... she would reach the roof top... where the stairs ended... the streaming lights of the setting sun made her feel uncanny... her shadows tagging behind... the only connection to this mortal world... she loved being alone... it gave her time to be away from the tensions of the world... to think about herself... her new life and the changing dimensions...

It was another of these days when she had sneaked into the roof top. She was sad that day. Sad due to several reasons. She had missed the physics lab for being three minutes late. Mrs. Jojongandha Chatterjee had thrashed her left and right. She could almost feel the tears welling up in her eyes but she hadnt let them find a path to the outer world. That would have been against self-esteem, the only thing she has come to love about herself over the years. To top it all, she had unable to talk to Rajanya mam during the last three days. She had been very busy. Today for the first time, even her favourite place couldn't lift her spirits. She decided to walk down back to the grounds. Just as she was turning back, something caught her eyes between the trees. She was dumbstruck.

Through the gap in the trees, she could see a guy and a girl sitting very close. No, that was not something to be surprised about and agreed, it was a very common scene in GEMI. But what had struck her was, from the dress that the girl was wearing, she could swear on her life that it was Swastika... But the question was who was she with??? Sree decided to hold on and watch for some more time...

This post would come up soon... I am still unsure about the details... Sorry... Hope to update soon...

Sree... Alone...

Sree was sad. Really sad. This kept coming back to her. This was not the first time. Ever since her school life she was a part of a trio but always a third person in the trio. In school it was Sneha, Kirti and she. In the tuitions, it was Soumee, Piali and she. And now again it was Swastika, Arushi and she. Why did she always remain a third person still remained a mystery to her. She was always tormented due to this. She couldn't find an answer. Why was it always that the other two people had to be so compatible? Her overall image had always been a friendly person's. Infact, she was the only person to have interacted with the entire class in such a short span of time.

Finding no other alternative, she decided to sit back with Shakshi. Shakshi was a sweet girl that went without doubt. But she always seemed to have left her brain back home. It was becoming increasingly difficult for Sree to cope with her. If Sree would miss to understand something and enquire into Shakshi, the most common reply was, "Arre, just copy it... Later on we will understand..." This would put Sree off. She hated this concept of copying without understanding. But she knew there weren't too many options. The other girls in the class were worse still. A question kept coming back to her... How could she be surrounded with so many fools... or was she the fool...

In school, she was surrounded with extra-curricular activitites. Here, she didn't come across any such thing in the college. Then all of a sudden, Mr. Biswas asked her if she would be interested to help him with the news-letter of the college. There was no question of denial. And there in the English lab... She meet Mrs. Rajanya Chakraborty... Sree took an immediate liking towards her...

The trio... made or broken?

Sree was touched by what Arushi had done. It was inherent in Sree that she never forgot what people did for her. That day itself during the break time Sree asked Arushi to join her and Swastika for lunch. Arushi readily agreed. And for the first time Sree saw her smiling ear-to-ear. She was evidently happy. For the next two days, the trio met up at Swastika's house to prepare for the exams. Swastika's house was one of those Zamindar times... huge with arched doors and waxed red floors. They had an entire room to themselves and her family never butted in during their studies. Infact her parents were a very friendly couple.

By the end of Monday, they had somehow battled through the entire syllabus of the six subjects atleast once. And when they were finally handed out the question papers for the next three days, they weren't atleast aliens to the topics. Finally the exams were over and the marks were out.

Sree had modestly scored above 25 in almost all subject except Physics. She concluded, this subject would haunt her down her life. Not that she didn't understand well, but never scored well. But to surprise them all, Swastika had topped the class followed by Arushi, evidently disappointed but much to their relief she atleast didnt brood over it for more than 3o minutes... For those who knew her, knew it was a minuscle amount...

Life was sailing by. All of them were happy... if not cintended... But... One fine day Sree entered the class to find Swastika sitting with Arushi. Both of them smiled at her... But Sree couldn't straighten her brow...

a week or so...

What had happened to Arushi that didnt remain a mystery for long. She didn't appear in college the next day. The after that when she finally returned, she was accompanied with her parents and by the end of the day around 12 students were suspended. When she had finally returned to class and had told them the incident. They were dumbstruck. She was closed in an unused room for three hours. How she had battled her claustrophobia was unknown to her. Inspite of her arrogancy, Sree couldn't help but like the courage of this girl. Her urge to abide by the law.

A week passed by. By the end of it they were simply over-burdened with practicals from all the labs which could literally haunt you- it started with graphics and ended with workshop, only to be filled in by physics, mechanical and electronics. They had already started swearing at those people who had in some point of their life told them that 'Engineering is easy...'

Life had lost its excitement. The new flavour had also gone. Ragging was on the backfoot since the incident with Arushi. And to top it all, the first internals were just a week away. This is when Sree fell ill. And the day before she had left her copy in the class and had accepted her fate about failing in the upcoming test. When she finally returned to class, it was just three days left for the exam. This is when Arushu returned her copy. And to her surprise... Every word of the week's notes were scribbled in Sree's copy... but only in Arushi's handwriting...

In the canteen...

The scene at the canteen was worth a sight. There was a queue of first years and parallely were the seniors sitting. An air of authority was so evidently lingering about them. The concept was very simple. You had to give your intro(short for introduction- not used because it sounded a bit 'uncool') to about 40 seniors and finally at the end of it you became the centre of attraction, with a special performance.

By the time Sree and Swastika had reached the front of the queue, they were witness to some classic scenes. Some of which could make you role on the floor with laughter when you were a mere spectator- but things took an evident U-turn when you were the victim.

Two boys and and girls were called out from the line. The girl was asked to play the fire, and the guys were asked to take 'pheras' around her...

A girl was asked to recite the table of 'quack'
quack ones are quack
quack twoes are quack quack
quack threes are quack quack quack...
and this continued until both the speaker and the listeners both lost count...

A timid looking girl who seemed to have never smiled in life was asked to Laugh in sine curve fashion...

The boy in front of them was called, soon it would be their turn...

The boy seemed to have just stepped out of his mom's lap, he was asked to do a cat-walk. All he managed was to walk three steps, and then somehow his feet got entangled and he fell flat on the face. Sree's heart ached for him. She turned around to look at Swastika. But the damage has been don by then. Swastika was in the middle getting him back to his feet. Much to their surprise, Swastika was allowed to leave....

Sree was asked some mathematical riddles which she managed to get by...

Next was Arushi, she was asked to pose  a burning candle...
She clearly said," I wont do it..."...

The first few classes...

The teacher who had walked in was meant to teach electronics and that is what he exactly did. In fact he didn't think it was worthwhile enough to even mention his name. He walked straight towards the board, started scribbling in there. And so it was for the next 45 mins. Simple incessant scribbling. Though, it is needless to say that the scribbled stuff was not exactly so simple. Until the break, they had two more class. One of English and the other of Maths. The students took an instant liking for the English teacher, because it being the first day, he had decided not to teach them. The Maths teacher was the irony of nature. He had certain pronounciation problems and his name just amplified them. Parents had named him Puspendu Jana, but the maximum he could manage to spurt out was Fusfendu Zana. More famous among the students as PJ (read PhiZe). He was one among those whom students would think twice before bullying. Just when it had started seeming to Sree that the break wouldn't really come, the bell rang. There was a audible sigh of relief. And PJ frowned.

Until the break, even Sree and Swastika couldn't talk much. Very soon Sree found that there was a complete assortment around them. Just in front of them were Arushi and Shakshi Patel. Shakshi had a ever smiling face, but very blunt eyes. And given a chance she could speak incessantly about the greatness of Gujratis. And just behind them were Mallika Naskar and Priya Roy. Mallika was a resident of an almost rural area, but that was until you saw her ID card. She was flaunting such a dress which even the city girls would think twice before wearing. Priya was a simple and sweet girl. They kept on talking in general over the lunch. The only question Arushi had put in throughout the entire discussion was, "What were your totals at the plus two level...?"

Irritated, Sree decided not to mingle much with this girl anymore. The second half was a lab. And thankfully indeed, the teacher just made groups of three, gave them the lab manual and left them for the day. All of them together started tramping towards the college gate. Just when they had left the main building, a group of guys and girls, evidently seniors blocked their way, "Ei, first year... what's the hurry... come let's go to the canteen..." ...an inevitable welcome to the hell...

The first day at college...

Sree and Swastika went together to GEMI the next day also. And thankfully enough, Swastika wasn't late anymore that day. They had reached well in time to find a big spacious room in the first floor awaiting them. ROOM 102 CSE, a blurred print out on the doors declared. Behind the doors was a spotless room, 4 rows of 12 benches each were neatly arranged. Each of which was meant to seat two people. By then very few of the benches were occupied. Thus they had enough options to choose from. Since, both of them were of the same opinion...'benches shouln't be too far or too near'... So with mutual understanding they chose the 4th bench by the window.

The view from there was excellent. There was a long stretch of free space which ended up at the college gate. It was dotted on the right with several deciduous trees. Moreover, from there you could see each and every person entering and leaving the college. Sree was more than happy with that location. Life seemed to get back on track for her. Unknown to her, a sad smile passed her face.

The class had started filling up. The girls had occupied the first few benches and the rest of them by the most foolish collection of boys Sree had ever seen ever in her life. Uncanny, but true. The shrill bell caused them to turn their gaze back to the green board. Sree was just in time to watch the 'Nerd' walk in through the door followed by a grim faced teacher. There wasn't much space left, so Arushi came up and sat in the free seat just in front of Sree and Swastika. Sree couldn't stop a giggle...

The Orientation Ceremony...

"Welcome to GEMI... Genius Engineering and Management Institute", boomed the Principal, "Today I'l brief the students about the past history of this college, the present situation and our future prospects..." They had anticipatated this coming and were thus very well prepared....

...Sree and Swastika were more than happy to learn that they both had got through GEMI. Not that the college was exceptionally good (though it was among the top 10 private colleges),but because they both knew atleast someone before they have entered college. Atleast a blessing for Swastika, she was no good in mixing up with new people. Sree on the other hand was excellent at these things. She always left behind a trail of friends wherever she went. Her phonebook was flooded with contacts. And so was Swastika. Another contact. But Sree was rather delighted when Swastika had offered to wait for her at the bus stand, but now she was feeling regretful. Swastika was late by 15 mins, had mumbled a sorry and changed the topic. The girl was so sweet that Sree couldn't afford to remain angry for too long. The college being in Saltlake, they had somehow managed to reach in time and got themselves a seat in one of the farthest corners of the hall...

They had lost count of the number of people who had come in to address the freshers. Not that they were listening. In fact, by the time the vote of thanks was being given, Sree and Swastika had exchanged with each other informations about their past schools, friends, family, crushes etc. etc... some tampered and some left untampered. Sree couldn't help but notice the girl on her right-side, decidedly unhappy with their chattering. Another nerd, she thought to herself...

Arushi Roy Chowdhury

Hell had broken loose at 15, Ganesh Chandra Lane. How could this happen? This was uncanny, bizarre, out of the world. Anything but true. A girl who had scored above 430 in her higher secondary results couldn't help but dream of a government college. But fate had something else in store for her. A four thousand and something rank had left her dumb-founded. Tears of frustation and agony welled up in her eyes. Her rank was way behind those of her close friends. There was only one question that hovered over and over in her mind... How the hell could this happen?

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Chowdhury had never let anything come in the way of the success of her daughter. But their daughter was made of a different fibre altogether. Inspite of an alto waiting at her doorstep, she preferred to travel in the over-crowded school bus, just to be around with her friends. She was one of those who could go to any extent to be a help to her friends. She would rather confess before doing anything which even hinted of rule-breaking. That was Arushi Roy Chowdhury. In short what you would call a 'very good girl'.

But today was very very different. She felt weird, irritated, disgusted and above everything alone. The world was closing in on her. The mere thought of getting into that mediocre college was enough to bring back tears. The tear-stains seemed to have left a permanent mark on her innocent face. Will she ever be able to adjust with these below-standard students?

Swastika enters

Swastika was one of those whom you wouldn't notice in a crowd. But once you have noticed her you can't afford to avoid her. Mild wheatish complexion, modest height of some 5' 4", bright bespectacled eyes, a slim figure which she flaunted only too well... courtesy tight jeans and tight tops, especially black. She had a modest rank the year before this one and had got herself in a college which compelled her to stay away from her home, which meant not even a sight of the man she had admired for the last two years...

...The thought of it brought tears to her eyes. He was her teacher. She had liked him since the first day she had met him. And even he had reciprocated her feelings, though in a much composed way, enough to suit his teacher-image. Things never worked out in their favour. The teacher's family played the villain  and the son decided to play the mamma's kid. But Swastika couldn't help but remember him every time she was alone...

The dong-dong-dong of the examination centre's bell brought her back to senses. Her exam was quiet good, she was sure this time she would make it in kolkata itself. Now that a burden was over, she declded to talk to the chubby girl sitting right behind her. The first time you see her you couldn't avoid noticing her over-sized figure. All the same, just the next moment what strikes you is her extremely intelligent eyes and within the next few moments you have to think of ways to battle her wit. Swastika had by then taken an extreme liking for this girl. She decided to take her contact number... 92314...

she continues...

Five thousand five hundred and... Her heart skipped a beat. Not that she cried often but this time she had no control over her lacrymal glands. The lock-gates had let loose. No it was not a reason to be happy for those who aim IITs, in fact it would have been a disgrace, a reason enough to commit suicide. But hers was different. Infact given the resources, she would have made it to the IITs or not still remains a question unanswered. This had made her life. Now she could study what she had always wanted to, not in some government college but at least in some private college. A loan could be arranged. And she would study...
She suddenly remembered the girl who was seated just in front of her on the day of the joint entrance examination. Now what was the name?.. She had always been bad with names... Umm... Yes... Swastika. She took a mental note to call her up.
The happiness that had set in within her with the sight of the results, had long evaporated, she wondered whether she will be able to share the real truth behind her so-called success with anyone ever. More still would she ever be able to forgive herself...

FROM WHERE IT ALL BEGUN...

Things will never be the same after today. She knew it, only too well.
It had been a gloomy day, so was her mood. The only thing that kept coming back to her was the outcome that today's result would bring her. It wasn't that, only her result was coming out, but not many had their fates sealed with them...
...The last year had been disastrous, her family didn't have the options to enroll her in any of those high profile institutes... It had been rather difficult to get by those tough stuffs all by herself... Especially after the hour long tuitions she had to render to small kids, at least to get her bus fare running...
A dazzling lightening followed by the deafening thunder brought her back to reality. She couldn't help but smile to herself, because by then her subconscious mind had but reminded her about the speed of the light-sound theory. she looked at the clock...another hour to 3... Yes, it was the day of the WBJEE results...

TITLE UNDECIDED...

MY FIRST POST

This may sound crazy... but i just created my blog... How is its primer look? Plz comment...
